During the State of the Nation Address presented through his speech to the Fifth (5th) session of the Twelfth (12th) National Assembly at Parliament on Friday 11th September 2020, the President of the Republic of Zambia, His Excellency Edgar Chagwa Lungu recognized the launch of the Zambia Trade Information Portal as a huge milestone towards improving trade in the country.

The President informed the nation that, increasing the country’s capacity to trade, particularly, in exports of a wide variety of goods beyond the country’s traditional products of Copper and Cobalt, has been an important goal of his Government. He added that it is his government’s desire to pitch Zambia as a competitive country by increasing Non-Traditional Exports (NTEs) to regional and international markets as well as improving domestic trade. The head of State added that it is for this reason that the Government has continued promoting exports, and providing the necessary environment for export diversification. The President further added that, a notable intervention is “the launch of the Zambia Trade Information Portal that provides all the necessary trade information to facilitate traders’ compliance with our import, export and transit requirements”. His Excellency, Edgar Chagwa Lungu, who is Zambia’s sixth President, further informed the nation that “while the average trade balance between 2016 and 2018 was negative, it should be noted that in 2019 the country registered a positive trade balance which puts the country on the path of economic recovery”.  To continue on the path to recovery, the Head of State said that there is need to take advantage of the wider market in the region, such as COMESA, and across the globe. And that there is need to consolidate the country’s position and participation in the African Continental Free Trade Area (ACFTA) while at the same time “continuously innovating and improving the quality of our products to compete favorably”, the President’s speech read in parts.

The Zambia Trade Information Portal (ZTIP) is an online platform from which Traders can obtain information for exporting goods out of, importing goods into and transiting goods through Zambia and it was developed by the Government of the Republic of Zambia with support from USAID in compliance to WTO Trade Facilitation Agreement requirements.
